Rena (Rusty) Kanokogi

1935 - 2009

We mourn the passing of Rusty Kanokogi.

So much can be said of the woman who was such a force in the sport of judo. She had a great, adventurous spirit, a great sense of humor and seemingly unending energy.

She never backed down from a fight she thought was worth fighting and never gave up, on the mat or off.

She was a pioneer in the world of womens judo. In a battle for equality that began in 1959, Rusty single-handedly brought women's judo to the World Championships and then to the Olympics. She was consulted by advocates of other women's sports for advice. Because of her, womens soccer, tae kwondo, weight lifting and wrestling have been added to the Olympic Games.

Her belief in equality was part of her everyday life. Everyone in our club was an equal, no matter where you were from or what your beliefs. She had a vision for the future. In that future, every child has the chance to be a champion. She believed in giving to the future of Judo, she was a strong advocate for the children of Judo. She gave funding so children, no matter their background, have a chance if they have the drive.

She was a great coach, a great referee, and a great advocate for judo.

She was my Sensei, but more than anything, she was like a mother to me.
